IS Java obsolete or a smoke screen?

Hi:
I shut off the JIT compiler for MSN VM and Sun ver 1.42_05 the latest java
1.) I surfed around the web, all my usual sites
2.) Played games at MSN game site
3.) Did a modem speed test for downloading jpg's images
4.) Hotmail, Lycos, ect
There is " NO difference" in speed or basic web surfing when Java is
On or OFF! Try it yourself and discover it !

It has nothing to do with speed - if you try using apps or loading web pages
that require Java, they won't work right.

The JIT compiler speeds up Java, which may be what caused the original
poster to think it should speed up everything.

Java is only needed if you go to a site that uses Java applets - Yahoo
games is one notable example. Aside from use in those sites (which will
not work at all without it) it makes no difference whether it is on or
off
