Is it true that Norton cannot detect virus in Instant Messaging?

Just wanted to know/confirm that Norton Anti-virus 7.5 cannot detect virus,
trojan, etc. embedded in instant messaging? An "add-on" is required. Could
someone please confirm or point me to related papers?
