Is it possible to set a root folder for an explorer window without showing
the whole network path?

this is for use by computer learners & the path in question is across a
county wide network and the navigator pane shows the whoooooooole network
hierarchy

is it possible to open an explorer window with the navigator pane rooted at
a specified folder level (hiding the parent path) ?

due to restrictions i cant map a network drive for them - grrrrr

Yes it is possible but you would have to create a share on that folder. If
you have the following example path

C:\Program Files\FolderA\FolderB\FolderC\FolderD\FolderE

You can share the FolderE so your users can map a network drive to
\\Servername\FolderE and not see any of the parent folders. It can also be
access fron the Run command or from the Windows Explorer from typing
\\servername\FolderE.

Maybe you could just create shortcuts to the network shares on their
desktops and have them navigate to that first.
