Is it possible to 'lock-down' styles in a Word Document?

Can Word (or Word Templates) be locked down to stop users modifying
the styles when they create documents?
The documents start off with half a dozen style, and when they have
finished they have 80!

I hope this can be done.

Helen:

It depends which version of Word you're using. For example, in Word 2000,
which I use, there's no simple, automated way to do this.

I think Word 2003 has this feature, and I'm sure Word 2007 has it. I just
can't tell you how to get there, as I haven't used the feature.

Here's hoping someone else will jump in and advise us both.

The answer is yes if you and all the users have Word 2003 or 2007.
(I'm not sure about 2002, but I think not.)

Click Tools > Protect Document (in 2007, Developer > Protect Document)
to open the Protect task pane. Check the box for "Limit formatting to
a selection of styles". Click the Settings link below the check box,
and choose the styles that should be allowed. Finally, click the Start
Enforcing Protection button, and supply a password if desired.
