Word 2003/2007: Saving Styles Universally?

I was trying to help someone out with this. We know how to create styles and
how to save them to our template so that all of our new documents have the
custom styles available, but they're always gone whenever we open up someone
else's word documents.

Is modifying one of the built-in styles the only way to have a style
available to you even when opening Word documents from other people or is
this simply not possible at all?

In Word, there is no such thing as "global" styles, no.

You can use the Organizer dialog box to copy the style(s) to the desired
document or template.

Sometimes you can make use of the "Automatically update document styles"
option in the Templates and Add-Ins dialog box, but note that this option
updates *all* styles in the document to match those of the attached
template.
