is it just me or can we only get Micro$oft newsgroups on Vista Windows Mail?

If you are referring to the Microsoft Communities in Windows Mail, the
server is msnews.microsoft.com
which, strangely, only carries Microsoft groups.

You can add other news servers, like giganews, or one provided by your ISP,
if you wish.
Tools - Accounts - Add - Newsgroup account

If your ISP doesn't give you access to a news server, search on Google for
accessing newsgroups. There are tons of free servers out there.
