Is ending a process dangerous?

I have a program called chameleon startup manager. I do studio stuff where I
dont need my nortern security running. when I stop the norton application
with the chameleon manager the message says " are you sure you want to end
this process" and that it could have undesirable effects.

should I not be doing this and if not I wonder what the purpose of chameleon
startup manager is?

Stopping Norton temporarily suspends anti-virus scanning until Norton starts
running again. Decide whether you want Chameleon by studying what it does:
<http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=chameleon+startup+manager&btnG=Google+Search&meta=>

If you can manage without Chameleon you may want to uninstall it, but you
may still get "are you sure you want to end this process" whenever Norton is
switched off because that's what most anti-virus programs do.

What Norton application? If it's the Firewall or AV and you're not "Always"
connected to the net, then go ahead and disable it. However I haven't and don't use
chameleon which may cause issues with Norton, not to mention you may get another
warning from Norton about an app attempting to shut it down. Norton may even block
the app as being malicious due to it's attempt to shut it down. If you really need
to shut Norton down, right click on it's icon in the systray/notification area, click
disable and select the time for it to be disabled. As well, don't forget to
re-enable it before using any outside disks or logging on to the web.

The URL points to a CNET download site that explains Chameleon Startup
Manager, you moron.

I was referring to your Google suggestion, not the URL, and there is no
need to get insulting.

I see nothing wrong with it when it IS the case. And it is the case here.

It -can- be dangerous, depending on what it is. If you're disabling Norton,
that message is coming from NOrton, not from your manager. You'll get it
regardless of how you stop Norton.

If you know nothing bad can happen, then don't worry about it, go stop it.
But if it's antivirus and you're still connected to the net, it would be
foolish to stop it; get off the net first! Turn the modem/router off so
there can be no comms.

One can disable the AV without going off line if one is not surfing the
net or opening email attachments.. What one should *not* disable is the
firewall. I have done it every time for years when I do Windows Updates
from the MS web site with no problems whatsoever.

First, Yes I have heard of google and I have the information on what it does
which does not explain what I wanted to know. Thats why I posted. Next The
norton internet security button on the lower right does "not" have a disable
or shut down option. Next Im aware that I shouldnt shut down firewall when
connected and have no plans on doing so. Next The message that comes up is
the same one that pops up when one trys to shut down a "process".

I Use sonar for music hobby and I dont want anything running that doesnt
need to be running when Im doing that. Including my internet connection. So
Im not online when using sonar. When I got the chameleon manager I was hoping
I could save my self the time of removing the check boxes from msconfig
startup and restarting everytime.

Yes it can be disabled via the icon in the systray/notification area. For NIS 2006
and earlier, right click on it's icon in the systray/notification area, click
"disable NIS" and/or "disable NAV" in the popup menu and select the time limit for it
to be disabled. If you have NIS 2007 you have to click "disable NAV auto-protect" in
the popup menu and select the time limit for it to be disabled, both NIS and NAV will
be disabled.

You see nothing wrong with insulting people? Please explain.

I guess that when your social skills are such that this is all you get in
return, you end up believing that trading insults is the norm.

He must be great to work with. :)
