I just went through that same thing three weeks ago and
coincidentally, mine is a Sony pcv rx 590G that I have
had for only 18 mos. After many hours of knowledge base
searching, and several hours of talking with Sony folks,
the answer basically is yes it is lost. There is,
however, a way to recover what is on the disk if you want
to spend the money. There are Pros who specialize in
recovering data from bad hard drives but like I said, it
is expensive. Good luck
