Is AVG anti-virus any good?

Just rebuilt my machine, Mother board came with AVG anti-virus.
It is the free version.
Can I trust it?
I still have Norton AV 2003 from before my mother board went south.
I assume I could just re-install that, Right?

I've used it and do NOT trust it. Others may have different opinions, but
that's mine after 2 years of use, and several infestations (family
machine).

Personally I would say yes, re-install Norton since you have it
available. AVG seems to be allright but several friends have tried it
and found it to be lacking when it comes to viral detection. If you
truly want a free antivirus give avast! a go, haven't had a problem
with it yet :)

I had McAfee, the 'OnLine Clinc' for two years or more. I now have AVG
6.0.....yeppa..the free version.. and I have NO crashes, NO problems, and NO
viruses....viri...virim...(virium..?)....yeah..none of that. It all boils
down to what each user expects from a program. We all expect different
things. I don't want a virus...and I don't get any now..and it provides for
heuristics detection (insectus infectus). So...you zap your warts, and grub
worms too.

But, then again, you can stick with Norton. You can really count on
it...'cause..sooner than later, you're sure to get what ya ask for. ;-))

Good luck!
Jan :)

I've never had a problem with AVG Free.
It has found things other AV products have missed.
In fact, I'm always surprised when I see a post
here about a technical glitch with AVG, or that
it's deficient in some regard. Command Antivirus,
based on F-Prot, won't find or clean things AVG
does. This is my opinion only. You can see by
the replies that some others disagree.

Doesn't say well of AVG does it? I purchased AVG Pro 7.0 because I
wanted to get away from NAV for two reasons... it is bloatware and I
refuse to support any software that incorporates this new activation
scam which is nothing more than telling me that I have to call in and
prove that I didn't steal their stupid software in order to get it
activated (Assumed Guilty before proving innocence).

Anyway, could not get AVG to scan email. Every time it was set up to
scan email, whatever it was changing in the email configuration was
not liked by Adelphia (my email service) and I was always denied
access to get my email (failed authorization each time). I had the
email scanning setup using the AVG wizard and I had two suggested
manual configurations with none working.

So, I reinstalled NAV 2003 bloatware which I really didn't want to use
but... it works. Will NOT goto NAV 2004 activation scamware though.
Will stick with 2003 until they stop supporting it with virus def
updates.

OK, fair enough.
I lean more toward Norton.
So now this question:

Should I just grab the 2004?
It's at Sam's club now, and cheep.

What do you guys think?

I've tried Norton, McAfee, and others. Now I use AVG and I have had no
problem thus far and I have been using it for some time. Plus, it
doesn't use all your system resources like Norton,

Consistancy isn't their strong point.

I've got friends who use AVG and it 'detects problems' with emails I send
them. Yet my AV (NAI) says all is clear. I'm sure my system is clean so it
can only be a false positive with AVG.

Also, One of my PC's used to run AVG, but it had trouble cleaning a virus,
can't remember which one. So I upgraded to NAI for that PC too.

I don't turn it off for automatic updates, nor did I for the few times I
updated on demand. I am having a problem uninstalling a program (CDBurnerXP
Pro). After the uninstall, Norton complains. Following the prompts to their
website it looks as if I would have to uninstall and reinstall Norton to
fix. Can't do that since it came pre-installed with new machine (and I am
not about to do a restore to initial purchase). A re-install of cdburner
fixes problem. Possiblely when Norton comes up for renewal I'll re-assess
the situation. I was registered (and still am) registered with EzTrust, I
like them both, plus I like what I hear about Sophos.

Dave:

There is DLL that is shared by both programs. When you removed CDBurnerXP it removed that
shared DLL causing NAV to generate an error message. Reinstalling CDBurnerXP put that
shared DLL back into Windows thus NAV no longer generates the error message.

Can't do that since it came pre-installed with new machine (and I am
not about to do a restore to initial purchase).

You shouldn't have to. You should be able to reinstall Norton, by
itself, from your restoration CD.

You'll find Sophos to be a rather expensive option for home use. It is
designed specifically for the corporate market and priced as such.

I just got rid of Command Antivirus. I did a manual scan and it
wouldn't scan the "class" files. It noted them as "unknown file type".
Furthermore in its default file setup it has HT* and HTA. That doesn't
make sense. If you have HT* then you don"t need HTA. It's already
covered by HT*.

I replaced it with NOD32 which has the "class" files in its default setup.
