Irritating scrolling

Recently the behavior of scrolling in my IE has changed. When I grab and
drag the scroll bar the bar does not move directly with the movement of my
mouse. It is like it has become sluggish and has to catch up with the
movement of the mouse. I think this started happening when I attached a new
MS basic optical mouse, but even if I remove this mouse and try another the
scrolling is still this way.

This is really irritating when I am scrolling down a long listing and I stop
my mouse to look at a specific item and the page scrolls on a little further
and the item I want to look at ends up off the page.

Anybody familiar with this and how to make it stop?

Hi R. Wilson :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

There is an option to set smooth scrolling in the display properties in
Windows. See if that's checked. If not check it and see if that fixes
the problem.

Also try updating your video drivers

if you have XP, and you haven't already, installing MS04-004 (832894) should
fix this issue.

In addition to Jan's comments, the is also a smooth scrolling setting in IE
at Tools...Internet Options...Control Panel, Browsing section.

Thanks for your reply Jan. The problem does not effect other applications.
In fact I am viewing this news group using my browser and if I drag the
scroll bars within the newsgroup window there is no problem, but drag the IE
main scroll bar and it is just real goofy.

Thanks, Rob.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your reply.

I did try unchecking the smooth scrolling with no change. As I told Jan the
problem seems to be just with IE. I can go to Windows Explorer and it
doesn't happen there.

It is really weird, it is like I'm pulling it with a rubber band. I can
even change direction and be moving in the opposite direction the scroll bar
is moving until it catches up with me.`

Thanks again, Rob.

Hi Rob :)

This courtesy of Frank Saunders -

If this update 824145 is installed it may be the cause.
It can be removed with the Add/Remove applet but you will loose the security
protection.

Work around:
Click immediately under the slider.
Drag the slider.
Use the mouse wheel.
Use the Page Down and Page Up keys.

also.....

This can also be caused by a variant of the Coolwebsearch. Download,
install and run CWShredder and HighJackThis. Run the both in Safe Mode.
Follow all instructions carefully. Also run SpyBot S&D and AdAware. Even
though you may have run them, do so again in Safe Mode. Some variants can
hide in Windows files or be 'in use' and can't be detected or removed.
