IRP Stacking Value (event 2506and Script Blocking Service Event 7000

F

Francis Jones

For weeks now I have been experiencing sudden, unexplained
system crashes/restarts. I have run Win 2000 Setup/Repair
several times and reinstalled all of my external hardware
and reinstalled my major applications including DSL. The
only result I have gotten is I have lost my Win 2000 HELP
files and screwed up my Registry. I have a backup copy of
the Registry so I end up going back to this flawed
Registry. There are two Events which lead up to the
crashes: (1) Event 2506 which states that my IRPStacking
Registry Value in the LanmanlServer/parameter is invalid
and (2)a 7000 type Event which states that the
ScriptBlocking Service service failed because it could not
find the file specified. These two Errors occur about
each half hour, whether I am online or not and they do not
occur in a specific order: I could have the 7000 Event
occur before the 2506 Event or visa-versa -- the net
result is the same -- immediately after the second event
occurs, the system either crashes (freezes up) or that it
goes into a restart. I would really appreciate some help
here which did not include reinstalling Win 2000 Pro from
scratch as a new install as I don't have a method of
safeguarding my files and applications during the
reinstallation. I thank you in advance for your help in
this matter. fejiii

What is the ScriptBlocking Service? Are you able to start the

Thanks for your reply. I am not sure if indeed I did
manually change the IRPStacking or it it was changed for
me via the net. In any case even when I repair W2000 the
value for the Lanmanserver remains unchanged. What is
autotuning???

Patrick, thanks for the link. I don't know how I missed
it in my search but it appears to address the IRPStack
size issue and maybe that will fix the
ScriptBlockingService issue, whatever that is. I do have
one question about the remedy process; it says "NOTE: You
may have other entries here that are statically coded. Do
not remove these entries" How do I recognize staticallyt
coded entries?

Thanks again,,,Francis

1.) This article describes a procedure to restore the server service to
auto-tuning status. It includes deleting, among others, the "IRPStackSize"
value. Which is what I usually do in this case.

2.) You may need to remove/reinstall your Symantec product to cure this one.

Dave, this PC is really confusing me I don't know if I
have already sent this message to you because I have
crashed several times during my visit to the newsgroup.
Anyway, that was a good link. I have yet another question
about the IRPStackSize: my currentcontrolset\parameter
for IRPStacksize is: IRPStackSize REG_DWORD
0xfffffffc (4294967292)----this item is right at the heart
of my problem. What value should it be and how do I
change it?

I would simply delete it.

The ScriptBlocking Service is a Symantec service hence the suggestion of
remove/reinstall the product.

Dave, I went ahead and "bit the bullet" here and deleted
everything except those items mentioned in the article and
one further item which I thought might be 'statically
coded'. Lo and behold the system took the changes and the
2506 event error stopped happening but the 7000 event
mentioned previously and in the General forum under ( Help
