I have been told that IPX/SPX is probably not installed - I might not be in
the right newsgroup as I haven't a clue what they mean or do or where do I
get them to install. I am on laptop running Win XP

That is a network protocol. You may add it in appropriate network
connection properties.

Thank you Mario but in the properties of the three connections I have,
'broadband', 'lan' and 'pay as you go', the box alongside IPX/SPX is
checked. Is there anywhere else I should look?

Then it' s installed and bound to the interface.

You may try do remove the check on the interfaces you don' t want to use
with that application.

If that doesn' t work, check if your application is really compatible to
Windows 2000/XP/whatever you use.

What are you trying to run?

Thank you again. I must admit that all boxes are checked when viewing the
protocols of each of my networks. I have Talktalk broadband on a laptop
running Win XP as well as a Pay As You Go (Virgin) internet connection.
This laptop is connected to one other running Win XP using ICS through a
five port switch.

In Talktalk Broadband do I require 'Client for MS Networks' and 'Client
Service for NetWare' boxes to be checked? as well as NWLink
IPX/SPX/NetBIOS.

The same goes for the LAN and PAYG. I can see what modems are being used
but do not know which to keep in the properties section in the column headed
'The connection uses the following items...'

You only need NW Client if you link up to a wired Netware server at work, you
can lose that. I've been finding netbios and ipx\spx might be important for
some of the various kinds of communications you use in broadband and other
stuff. They get encapsulated in stuff. You can uncheck NW, but I'd leave the
rest there. Wish I could splain it better, but I'm really just beginning to
get the protocols and services under my belt. Just discovered some neat stuff
by plugging a 2nd DSL modem in on the usb and running the other "Phone line"
through another DSL/Phone splitter. 2 different IP addresses! Now if I can
just figure out how to shotgun them.....
