I've got a Acer Aspire 2000 running Windows XP laptop with service pack
1 on it. In the last couple of weeks, it has suddenly stopped
recognizing the ethernet and wireless network connections in the
computer. We use the ethernet port and DHCP and when I boot up, I do
not get an address. When I run the ipconfig command, it does not show
either of the built-in network adaptors. The only thing it prints out
is "Windows IP Configuration". It will however detect the fact the
network cable is plugged in and then unplugged (it shows in the little
balloon at the bottom of the screen).

My fix is to go into the properties for the ethernet adaptor, set the
static IP address and then shutdown. I then boot back up and it now
recognizes both the ethernet and wireless adaptors. I can then go in
and reset the properties to dynamically get their address and everything
works for a few days just fine. Then suddenly it will stop working
again and I have to repeat the procedure.

I also have a Cisco and Nortel VPN client installed on the system but
they have been installed for quite a while.

I don't know if I'm looking at a hardware issue or an OS issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks

We've had this problem on a few machines for a couple of months and it's been
driving us nuts. We are experiencing this mostly on Dell Latitude D600 or
D610s. I did a lot of investigation on the net and it seemed likely it was
related to Intel wireless cards, Broadcom network cards, Centrino M
processors and either Nortel or Cisco VPN software (we have both installed).
We had Dell change the wireless cards for different models, rebuilt machines
etc but nothing worked. We thought we had a solution by changing to Dell
wireless cards but after 2 months of heaven two machines broke again and
dispelled that myth. On one of them I removed the wireless card and it has
been OK since, the other was defunct for two days even with the wireless card
removed. I left it over the weekend and without changing anything it is now
working again.

At present it seems entirely random. The only definite fix I have is to
remove Cisco VPN, but unfortunately our people need it.

We are running XP Pro with SP2 on all machines. If anyone finds a solution
let us know!!!!
