IPconfig device not functioning error

Following error occurs when i issue command [ipconfig] from command prompt :

< Windows IP Configuration

An internal error occurred: A device attached to the system is not
functioning.

Please contact Microsoft Product Services for further help.

Additional information: Unknown media status code >

Seeking any help to resolve this problem. Error occurs in my IBM T42 workhorse

Your network card may be failing. try updating the drivers, if that doesnt
work, buy a new one.
