I am unable to access the Internet. I am running Windows 2000 Pro, and using a Linksys router. Even when I connect directly from my LAN line to my computer, my autoconfiguration IP address begins 169.254. Please help.

Is your linksys router set up as a DHCP server? The autoconfiguration
address means your computer can't find the DHCP server - could also be a
network card or cabling issue.

Ask your ISP for the instructions on the correct network setup.

My router works fine with my laptop, just not my desktop. I hooked my desktop up without the router, and I have the same problem. I have installed the latest drivers for the NIC card, still nothing.

My ISP was no help. Since I have a laptop currently running on the connection with no problem, I think it is an issue with the machine rather than the ISP.

On the laptop from a command prompt;
ipconfig /all
and compare the results with the same command on the desktop.

I re-read your original post and see that I misunderstood your question -
sorry.

Look at the NIC itself on the back of your PC. do you have 2 lights (1
green, 1 normally orange)? If not, your cable is either broken, wrong, or
not plugged in

Try switching the network cablees from your desktop to your latop and test
both machines for connectivity
Your NIC should have some basic testing capabilities in the propertiees to
verify it is working ok
Look in your Hardware manager for ny conflicts
