It is ZoneAlarm firewall. I am setting it up on a new laptop and ZoneAlarm
has given me notice that an IP is showing up as a new network (it gives me
the IP address). It is asking if I want to accept it as a new allowable
network. I am on a wireles network with 4 computers and I want would like
to know if the device that the IP address is referring to is one of mine or
perhaps one of my neighbors.
The IP address does not tell you anything whether it is your neighbors
device or yours. Anyone can set any IP address and the consumer routers
assign private IP addresses that can be change easily. Connect to your
router via ethernet cable, setup wireless security, use a unique SSID
for your wireless network and then you can be sure to connect to your
router and not your neighbors. The IP network which ZA will pop up is
yours. Otherwise you have to check the MAC address of the device
connected to verify if it is your router or not. But the MAC addresses
can also be forged easliy in most consumer routers...
In cae you allow your neighbors to use your internet connection any
effort is useless. IP addresses are no mean of protection in a LAN and
ZA won't help you there if you want your computer to be open to your
computers and not to others (unless you set up a VPN...)
