IP Address on LAN

Hi all.

I hope this isn't a stupid question.
I've searched and cannot find a specific answer.

I've got a small lan, 2 pcs running xp home.
They are networked through a linksys router that is connected to a
cable modem.
Both pcs can access the internet just fine.
Most of the time they can see each other fine.
We are using Zonealarm as our firewall.

The problem arises when we have to reset the router.
When we do that each pc gets asigned a new lan ip address that is
different than the old one.
As such, those settings don't match the firewall settings and the pcs
can no longer see each other.
We have to go in and change the access ot each pc in Zonealarm. Then
everything works fine.

Is there some way to asign a dedicated lan ip address to each pc?
I've looked in the network settings and in the settings for the nic and
can't find such a setting.
One of the pcs is an hp that's about 1.5 years old. The other is a
compaq that is about 6 years old.
Perhaps there's a problem with the nic in the older pc?

Thanks, in advance.

To assign a dedicated (static) IP address to a computer for use with
your router:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right-click the LAN connection.
3. Click Properties.
4. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)".
5. Click Properties.
6. Click "Use the following IP address".
7. Enter the IP address.
8. Enter the router's LAN IP address as the Preferred DNS server.
9. Click Advanced.
10. Add the router's LAN IP address as the default gateway.

However, all that shouldn't be necessary. Just configure ZoneAlarm to
put the entire local area network in the Trusted Zone. With a Linksys
router, the LAN usually uses the IP address range 192.168.1.x.

Hey Steve,

I followed your suggestions and it seems to work ok.

Another question, if I might.
What value should I enter in the "default gateway" section of the
TCP/IP settings?

Thanks again.

Is that a question for me? If so, I've lost track of the original
message. Please post another message with full details, and I'll
answer the "default gateway" question if I can.

Yes, Steve.
Just wondering what value I should put in the "default gateway" field
of TCP/IP.
However, I called Linksys and they answered me.
They said that it should be the address of the router that the pc is
networked to.
Do you concur?

Thanks.

Yes. That's the normal setup for a computer that accesses the
Internet through a home broadband router.
