Iomega Zip Drive Removal?

I had a Iomega Zip External Drive on my system. I removed it as I did
not need it anymore (got an external WD Harddrive instead). But,
after removing the USB Zip Drive, it still shows up in My Computer and
also in "Safely Remove Hardware". I can go into Safely Remove
Hardware and delete the item, and it is removed from Safely Remove
Hardware and My Computer, until I reboot the system and then it's
back.

I checked in Device Manager and do not see a reference to this device
in there. I'm running Windows XP with all the latest updates.

Any thoughts from anyone on how I can get references to this drive
completely removed on a permanent basis?

Where do I find this iomega software installation. I've searched my
disks and do not see it. A pointer would be nice!

It looks like the device drivers are still installed.

Look in Control Panel > Add or remove programs.
Also, look in the Device Manager, and if there are
any references to the Zip, right click them and
select Uninstall.

I've searched Add or remove programs and Device Manager and see no
reference to Iomega Zip Drive. Could it be under another name or
something?

Well, did you ever install their IomegaWare? Since Windows would
recognize the device as a removable drive, maybe you never installed
their software.

What happened with you use the Safely Remove Hardware applet to stop
the device?

Now I see what you're talking about, you disconnected the Zip,
but it's still showing as a drive letter in Explorer and in the notification
area. If this is the case, reconnect the drive, then go through the
"safely remove" procedure before disconnecting.

When I use Safely Remove Hardware - it removes the device from Safely
Remove Hardware and My Computer during that session. But when I
reboot the system - it is back in both places.

I reattached the Zip Drive and it was detected, but came up with a
different drive letter then before (Old was "G", reattached was "H").
I used Safely Remove to remove both G & H, both were removed, rebooted
and "G" was back, but not "H".

What's next? If anything!

There is a way to get rid of it, but that requires going into the registry.
 
Put the following into a batch file:

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd %SystemRoot%\System32
start devmgmt.msc

then run the batch file. When the Device Manager opens select View>Show Hidden Devices.
In the Disk Drives entry you should see a greyed out listing for the Zip, right click and select
uninstall and it will remove this item's information from the registry.

For now, you can just open a DOS shell (Command Prompt) and enter the
commands manually.

Also, if you want to permanently allow yourself to see what has been
previously recorded (enumerated) for devices that are now disconnected
(so, by default, are not shown), you could add the environment
variable permanently to your Windows shells by:

- Right-click on My Computer on the desktop and select Properties. Or
use the System applet in Control Panel.
- Advanced tab.
- Environment Variables button.
- Create a new environment variable. If you make it a system
variable, it is available to all users (accounts) on that host. If
you make it a user variable, it is defined only when you login under
your account.
- Add a new environment variable called
"devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices" (sans quotes).
- Give it a value of 1.
- Ok your way out. Now the variable is defined for any program that
starts afterward.

If you want to use a batch file, create a .bat file using Notepad and
enter the commands that David mentioned. Then run the .bat file (by
double-clicking on it, for example, or call it in a DOS shell).
 
This is how I do it:

Open Notepad.
Paste in the text.
Do a File>Save As.
Select where you want to save it to.
Change the file type from .txt to All Files.
Put in name such as Show.bat.
Select save

Then you can double click the batch file and it will execute on its own.
