invisible network adapter un-deletable

I recently switched all my components to a new
motherboard, even the CPU. Went though all the setup
procedures and installed nessisary drivers. Both the new
and old motherboards had on-board networking. However on
the new board, the 1394 connection isn't working. It
seems to be because the old network adapter is still on
the system and active!? However, since that piece of
hardware doesn't actually exist for the system anymore, it
won't show me the piece so that I can delete it. So the
new network adapter doesn't work because the old (non-
existant) one is still present in some form or another.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Open a command prompt and type the following

set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
devmgmt.msc

in that device manager you should be able to see the device.
