invisible LAN icon under "Network and Dial-up Connections"

Windows 2000 Pro SP4, Dell Latitude laptop.
Under "Network and Dial-up Connections" the only icon
visible is "Make New Connections". The systec connects to
the LAN and Internet fine but, without the icon, I don't
know how to access the NIC IP properties.

MS Article 254631 had some suggestions that I tried but
the problem remains. I uninstalled the 3Com Nic from
hardware management and re-installed but still no icon.

Any suggestions?

Very good stuff but no affect. I still need to roll back
the hot fixes and sp updates and test that. There may be
some apps in conflict but I do not have the symptom on
other computers.
