invalid product key

Guest

my cousin bought her computer in december, and it came without an OS. She
went to the university bookstore, and bought a windows XP package, she
installed it, and it worked fine, now 2 months later, it asks for the product
key, saying her trial period is up, so she put in the product key on the box,
and it says invalid product key.

I dont get this since she just bought this 2 months ago.

PLEASE HELP, we've been tearing out hair over this whole deal, and microsoft
hs been telling us to call back tomorrow....everyday for the past week.....

i would guess that that software is pirated.
why would someone buy a trial?
my only suggestions are to get another product key from Microsoft, or buy a
copy of XP from a trusted source, OR upgrade to Vista.

At the risk of sounding a bit cynical, the message quoted above is
almost certainly deceptive. I would strongly discourage users of this
group from providing "assistance" of any kind.

In other news, last week I stopped for a pizza and, when I got back to
my car, was shocked to discover that fifteen random women had decided
to temporarily store their purses and jewelery in my trunk...

it doesnt say trial anywhere on the box, and nowhere in the installation did
it say trial anywhere, so idk, we will try those 2 ideas, and see how far
that takes us

Need more information from the cousin. Legitimate purchases from an
University bookstore tend to be above-board. The operant words here
are: Windows XP package. Just what is it or bundled into the package?
That is, were there trial software in the package? IOW, it might not
be Windows XP with an invalid product key but perhaps that of an app
that was bundled with it by the bookstore.

If you post the key here I will be able to tell you if its valid or
not.

sounds interesting
and i would be curious to know
how.

however, validating the key
here is not necessary as microsoft
has "ordained" that copy invalid....

your method may declare the key
valid or not valid; the question
is how will microsoft resolve
the issue at hand....

How, by stealing it and using it yourself? Only a complete idiot would
post such information to a public newsgroup or forum, thereby "giving
away" his/her license.

That sounds more like a message from a 60 day trial version of
Microsoft Office rather than anything that would be produced by
Windows XP.

yes, i had wondered about that
as well.

colleges are in the partnership

I am a 77 yr old retiree trying very hard. My computer was purchased from
Compaq and had Windows XP already installed. Recevied no disk. Now just 2
days ago I tried to install the Windows XP Service Pack 2 , and after all the
installing, downloading, etc .. the box ask for Product Key.. (prior to this
it was operating fairly well).. I obtained the Numbers off the sticker on the
computer (Had to use a magnifyer to read them) - and I am positive the
numbers are correct.. Now I receive the 'Invalid Product Key' message? Have
called Microsoft, Compaq, emailed them also.. I know nothing of pirating,
will pay for whatever I get, but as it stands now ,, cannot get on computer,
it is worthless. Is there a simple way to remove the install? Is there a
program to wipe this computer clean of Microsoft? Have been on this all day
and am no closer to a solution than when I started last night at 11 am..Does
anyone out there have a legitimate solution? thanks.

if you can log into your computer
click on the link above to download
the little file. Then run it and it
will find your product key and
present it to you.

write it down and be sure to
pay close attention to the differences
between zeros and the letter O's.

These can be tricky to distinguished.

The key should be the same one you
have already. But it doesn't hurt
to double check and compare the key
you have with the one the system says
it has.....
