invalid product key

I recently bought a new laptop with XP Home pre-installed. I purchased the
XP Pro upgrade and attempted to install it, but it would not accept the
product key. I took it back to the store, and they gave me another box, but
the same thing occurred. The upgrade Setup scans my system fine, and is
ready to upgrade until I try to enter the key. I ran the compatibility test,
and there were no problems detected. I went onto the Microsoft site and
worked through the Knowledge Base article 310637, but still can't get it to
work. Any suggestions?

Product keys that don't work are becoming an increasing problem. I recently
setup a batch of HP NX6110's, and the key failed on all of them, despite
being on a label attached to an OEM machine, and using the disk supplied with
the machine.

First check that you haven't mistaken B's for 8's or O's for Q's etc. They
difference isn't too clear.

If you're sure you typed it in right, then call the product-activation line.
Type in a random string of digits when asked for the code. You'll then be
allowed to speak to an advisaor. Explain that the software isn't installed
yet, and that you need a replacement key.

Thanks Ian for your response to Leon's problem.....I, of course, have
encountered the same. What is the product-activation line.....I don't seem
to have that info handy and could REALLY use it! Thanks

I have not been able to use my microsoft word 2002 program for quite some
time. Tonight I finally decided to try to get this fixed. I have talked to
someone from Gateway as well as Microsoft on the phone to no avail. I keep
getting a message that says you have not entered a valid product code.
According to the sticker of authenticity located on the side of my tower, I
am using the right one. I have tried it at least one million times! Gateway
told me that it was a microsoft issue to call them so I tried both angles
again to no avail. Now what? The program is there and I have all my discs
and I even tried to reinstall everything by way of system recovery etc.
Microsoft mentioned something about a generic code but they did not have it
available unless I was transferred to a fourth person and would have to pay a
$35.00 fee! This does not seem right or fair. Any suggestions?

It came INSTALLED with the system?
It can be reinstalled by using Gateway's "restore" process?

To me that says "OEM" and points directly to being a Gateway issue.
Quit wasting your time trying to get something out of Microsoft and make
Gateway support what they were supposed to....
That assumes - of course - your "quite some time" has not put you "out of
warranty" with Gateway?

Hi,

I also own a gateway computer and the model number DOESN`T EXIST on their
web site. I argued with their support line without any result. They tell me
IT`S NOT A VALID model number. The same as your invalid product code I
guess.

I bought my Gateway at Future Shop in Montreal.

For your problem I would go to ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM, select Microsofy Office
2002 and click on MODIFY. You should get 3 choices one of these is REPAIR. .

Good luck,

I read this several times. As I see it he is using the Windows OEM serial
number from the side of the tower to utilize in a MSft Office program.
Doesn't work that way. Each has its own s/n as they are very different
products. But then I could be reading it wrong.

Regards,
