I have Win98 and I am attempting to upgrade to WinXP-Pro. I can't get past
the Product Key dialogue box. Could anyone help me out with this one. I'm
out of ideas here.
After I enter my Product Key the installation errors and will not let me
proceed. The error reads:
"The pid is invalid for this version of Windows XP, provide the pid that
came with the Windows Upgrade CD."
- I’m running Windows 98SE 4.10.2222.A
- My Win98 is current on all its updates.
- Scandisk and defrag are current.
- I purchased the XP software today from Costco.
- I have carefully verified that the Product Key was entered correctly.
- I've disabled my Norton Antivirus.
- I have copied the I386 folder from CD to hard drive.
- I have tried clean-booting Windows 98.
- I have read MS support articles 310064, 310637, 307153 without resolution.
The Setupp.ini on the installation CD contains:
Pid=76488000
This PID doesn't match anything I've been able to google. But the PIDs I
found for WinXP-Pro (Upgrade) wouldn't work in the Setupp.ini either. I was
hoping to avoid the trouble of a clean install - and at this point I'm not
sure if that would even work. Thanks for any help you could give me.
