Invalid existing format

If i try to Format the HD i get this error
"Invalid existing format.
This disk cannot be QuickFormatted.
Proceed with Unconditional Format (Y/N)" I said yes

"Formatting 19,092M
16 percent completed

Not ready
Format Terminated."

Anyone know whats wrong?

Download and run a drive diagnostic tool from the web site of the drive
maker, there may be a physical problem with the drive, and this should help
you determine that.
