invaild product key

i just bought a new motherboard and tried to install windows xp and when i
type in the product key, a pop up comes up and says " the product id you
entered is not vaild "
what do i do?

Have someone else type in the numbers they see.
What type of license is this (OEM, Retail, Retail Upgrade, etc?)
