Interrupting chkdsk from recovery console?

D

dean7710

I booted the Windows XP CD, and went into the Recovery Console. I
started chkdsk with the /r option, and it's taking a very long time.

I unsuccessfully tried to stop chkdsk with cntrl-C, cntrl-Z, and cntrl-
alt-del.
The computer does not have a reset button.

How can I interrupt/stop chkdsk?

Thanks,
Dean

You can pull the mains plug to stop this process but I would
not recommend this because you might end up with a
totally thrashed disk.

Yeah, I definitely want to avoid turning the computer off.

Because the chkdsk has been running since yesterday 6pm (about 17
hrs), I suspect a hardware problem, and would like to end the chkdsk
and do some diagnostics on the power supply, memory, and see if smart
drive is enabled. Unfortunately, If there's no way to interrupt, I'll
have to let it run. Chkdsk does seem like it's functioning (hard drive
light active, hard drive making normal accessing sounds), but it's
been stuck at 75% for about the last 15 hrs.

This dell pentium 4 computer is over 5 years old, and the hard drive
could very well be getting ready to fail completely. If chkdsk doesn't
finish after 24 or more hours, I'm considering powering down the
computer.

I would do much the same. To find out if this is a file system
problem or a hardware problem, download and run the free
diagnostic program that your disk manufacturer makes
available on his web site.
