internet-yes, network-no

I'm trying to setup a small home network using a desktop
connected to a linksys wireless router (WRT54G) and
internet broadband service, along with a laptop with a
54G wireless LAN. I've managed to get the internet
connection working on both the computers, but for some
reason, although I see both computers on the others - I
can't share files or printers. When I try to open the
shared folder I get a message saying "you might not have
permission to use this network resource. The network path
was not found".
Also, when I check the network connections on the laptop
under the Local Area Connection there's a message
saying "Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC - A
network cable is unplugged"
cable? Am I missing something? I tought it was supposed
to be wireless!
Any suggestions?

I have the exact issue. Actually I can also see other PCs with static IPs - use \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx but not \\computer name
I loaded netbios in TCPIP- advanced -wins - but still no luck - does anyone have an answer?
