Is it safe to purchase an operating system on line? I need to install xp as
a dual boot system on a new laptop running vista. I must do this because of
software compatibility problems with vista. I want to install xp to use
until the software compatibility issues are corrected. Is it safe to
download an operating system? How do you know the software is legitimate?
Since I will only be using it for a short time I would like to save some $
if I can. Thank You.

Depends on where you buy it from.

if you buy it from a link in an email which either claims to sell OEM
software or instant downloads, or just deals that are too good to be
true, then 9 times out of 10 it is false and you either get no Windows
or completely illegal Windows.

Also, buying from eBay is quite risky now, lots of software sold on
eBay is counterfeit.

Just be careful and make sure all the sites you even think of buying
from have https:// in the address bar, because the chances are if they
have bought an SSL certificate they will probably be genuine, unless
your browser tells you the SSL certificate is invalid.

Don't fall for deals that are too good to be true

You do realize that you will have a bitch of a time getting XP to even
install on a system that already has Vista on it never mind about the dual
boot............and especially so on a laptop. This will of course void your
warranty.
The usual dual boot procedure would be to have the older OS(XP) installed
and then install the newer OS(Vista) onto a seperate partition or HD.
Do a Google for Vista Dual Boot and you will see what I mean.
What Software are you having problems with under Vista...did that software
come with the Laptop??

It depends upon where you buy it. There are reputable Internet vendors
such as NewEgg or Amazon. Avoid on-line auction sites like eBay.
Getting a legitimate license of any kind from eBay is something of a
crap shoot. One should be very careful buying any software on eBay, as
eBay makes no prior effort to ensure that such sales are legitimate.
The problems stem from two completely different sources, but have the
same results: the buyer gets ripped off. A great many people don't fully
understand the terms of the license they own, and don't understand that
they cannot legitimately resell it, and - worse still - there are a
great many sellers who do know that they're selling bogus licenses. eBay
reacts only when someone files a complaint, and then all that really
happens, especially in the case of the many deliberate fraudsters, is
the seller of the pirated software returns using a different alias, to
continue selling illegitimate licenses.

Snipped....

Is it safe to
download an operating system?

No. Unless you already have a very expensive MSDN subscription, there
are *NO* legitimate sources from which to dopwnload a Microsoft OS.

How do you know the software is legitimate?

It's just the opposite. If you can download a Microsoft OS from any
source othe then Microsoft, then you know that it's most definitely
*NOT* legitimate.
