Internet Trouble

My friend has a laptop on which he has put Windows XP Office. He was able
to get on and use the internet for sometime after put XP on the laptop, but
now he can't use it. It will connect to the internet, but he can't surf or
use MSN IM or anything else that requires and internet connect. It will
connect, just won't work. Any ideas?
 
Sounds like there is a LAN setting to use a proxy or auto-configuration.

IE, tools, Options, connection tab, LAN settings button, uncheck box(es)
