internet timeout

I use a DSL modem to connect to the internet, so the
connection is always active.
The problem is this, when I let the pc go idle and sit for
a few hours, when I use any software that needs to connect
to the internet, I get a variety of errors:
DNS host not found this refers to my home page.
Host refused the connection
Host not found.
After the error displays, I try my home page again and it
works. I called my ISP and they suggested something in the
power settings, this doesn't make sense.
I have Windows set to automatically download and apply
updates,so a recent update could be causing this,
it has been going on for a few weeks.
Anybody got a suggestion Oh yeah I use W2k Pro
a hardware firewall, and zonealarm (not the latest edition)
free version. the hardware FW is a DI604

You might look to see if
ipconfig /all
reveals anything.

I assume you are saying to do this as a first thing before
I try to connect to the internet with IE?
to see if the host name is resolved? and this will tell
me if the problem is the host or my PC correct?

Yes before for record, then again after the issue occurs.

Hiya.
I tried the inconfig /all I see no change in the info
compared to before and after.
So it must be some setting in my explorers.
I use mozilla and IE and they both do the same thing.

as an experiement I logged onto my router and pinged my
home site ISP, it pings just fine. However opening the IE
or Mozilla after the ping and it tells me Host refused the
connection, or host site not found.
It also happens when I boot to XP and try the same thing.
I thought it might be my router/firewall so I updated it's
firmware, wouldn't even connect to the internet then, so I
reverted back, works ok, but the same old problem, any
suggestions???

| Thanks Dave I'll try that tonight.

.
.

Try browsing by IP address http://216.239.39.99/ to see if it a name
resolution issue. Also have a look at what's in your hosts file.
%windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

I use spyware blaster to lock my host file, but I will
check into it.
It must be related to a DNS resolution problem, as it
pings ok, but can't seem to locate it by name on the first
try, 2nd try yes..

This is interesting, what I found I can do, is to ping the
ISP home page and I connect with no problems, however it
tends to time out after I'm connected, this really bugs me

Ok I don't know what this means. Try browsing by IP address to see if it
works as opposed to browsing by name.

Today I tried the following:
open the cmd shell and ping my ISP home page, I get an
immediate response, it pings just fine. I open IE/mozilla
everything works just fine. So I think lets wait a few
minutes for the system to become idle, (i do) I (without
pinging) open mozilla and it finds my home page just fine!
This is wierd.. I did this a few times, and things worked
great, I don't know what the difference was, but now it's
working...let see if it's still working when I get home..

Hey Dave, I really appreciate your advise, thanks a bunch.

The problem is still not resolved, what I discovered today
is that a ping using the cmd shell doesn't resolve the
Host IP address, but just after I ping I can use IE and it
opens my home page just fine, I'm thinking it's got to
something with my ISP.

Still in the dark. You're still keeping it a secret as to whether browsing
by IP address works as opposed to browsing by name.

Sorry, I hadn't tried that yet! Most likley it won't make
a difference.
as I can issue the Ping command for my home page and it
fails, but I can then open IE and browse to my home page
just fine..
