internet stoping after 10 sec

i have bt broadband it connects fine, but all internet
connecting programs (IE,outlook,messinger) stop working
after about 10-30secs and tell me there is no internet
connection. but the connection is working as i can access
the internet from my sons computer which is connected to
mine by a network cable ---- i have since unpluged his
computer and ran the network wizard again telling it
their is only the main computer (no network) but i still
get the same messages no matter what i try ---- the
problem started after connecting the 2 computers for the
first time

can you ping a public ip? if yes, can you ping yahoo.com? if you can't ping
yahoo.com, check the DNS status.
