I subscribe to a cable service that is "up to" 7 Mbps but get only 3.0 to
2.8. Using speakeasy.net or myspeed.coxinet.net. Is this normal? What speed
should be expected? How good is your speed? Thanks.

My speed varies between 5 to 6.5 Mbps. It was much slower originally because
of two things.
1) Modem was old and obsolete (no longer supported by ISP), new modem
increased speed by 50%
2) Tcp Receive window was set to too low a value (now 56940), used Dr TCP to
set the value.

I'm on basic high-speed which is supposed to be up to 384 kbps download
and 128 kbps upload.

On a good day, I get 450 to 539 kbps download and 180 to 186 kbps upload.

See if your provider has a cheaper speed or talk to them on how to get
closer to "up to" 7 Mbps.

You might try rebooting your modem. Turn the modem off, disconnect the
power to the modem for one to three minutes, reconnect the power to the
modem and then turn the modem back on.

Sometimes mine slows down to a crawl and I have to reboot the modem and
the computer (WinXP he sp2) to get my speed back.

Thanks to JS. I set Tcp Receiver window to 56940 (it was less than 11000)
and after a restart the speed went to 6.66 Mbps!!! All my talks with Cox
tech never suggested this. Is there a way ( other than trial-and-error ) to
determine what that is the optimum TCP value?

Well yes and no, what I did was pick a value that worked well with a local
site and then tested that value on a site that was on the other side of the
US. I adjusted the Tcp value slightly for the distant sites but could not
get much of an improvement. Speeds vary at different times of the day or
week so it's not uncommon to see at 10% variation (slower/faster) from time
to time.

Dr TCP has other values you can modify but never seemed to have much effect.

That's pretty slow, our entry level DSL speed with Verizon is around 700kb
down and I've verified that with speakeasy at a friends house.

It's faster than what I'm paying for, it's much faster than my old
dial-up and it suites my needs.
