Computer: dell 8300, 1 year old, XP home, SP2 running for 4 months, 90%
system resources free, 3.0 ghz, 512 ram, broadband.
Problem: 3 days ago, Internet Explorer (IE) starting running about 1/100 of
capacity. All other software is working perfectly. No changes were made to
the computer when it just started running slow on the internet one morning.
Computer is shut off when not used.
Attempts: disconnected modem, no change. Currently running McAfee security
suite 7 and McAfee spyware (both brand new and updated). Firewall on. Ran
antivirus, no virus, worms or trojans. Deleted cookies, deleted temp files,
performed system defrag. Downloaded Firefox browser, just as slow. Called
ISP, verified correct IP address. ISP states modem is working full strength.
ISP had me run 2 items in DOS. One of which was IP regedit. I believe they
were checking the IP address. After this, I am running about 1/4 of normal
speed on the internet.
Help: I no longer have any ideas on what to do short of removing all
programs and wiping the hard drive and starting over. Is it worth it to call
a local computer company to come over to inspect? Any other suggestions?
