I had a similar problem, it happened after I did an XP
update patch. I beat my head against the wall checking
and double checking network settings. Ultimately I found
the problem was in Internet Properties (access it from
the CP or from IE). Click Lan Settings on the Connection
tab and make sure the two checkboxes in Automatic
Configuration section are checked.

I assume that you've enabled Internet Connection Sharing on the XP
machine and configured the 98 machine as an ICS client. These tests
should help you find the problem:

1. On the host, right click the local area network connection and
click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

2. On the client, go to Start | Run | Winipcfg, select the network
card from the drop-down menu, and click More Info. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on the client
and enter these lines. Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.100
ping www.google.com

4. If #1-#3 are right, enter these addresses in Internet Explorer on
the client. They should both take you to the Google web page:

Steve:
Items 1 & 2 are setup on the computers as you say and I
can ping the adapter on the host at 192.168.0.1 from the
client, however I cannot ping 216.239.39.100 from the
client. I can ping the client adapter (192.168.0.119)
from the host. Any other ideas? Thanks so much for your
help.

Steve:
I solved the problem by removing the McAfee virus and
firewall software. Thanks for your help.
