internet security/microsoft updates

Just wondering if I need to continually install the
numerous updates available from microsoft to keep my
computer safe from viruses, hackers, crashes, ect or is
installing an internet security program like Norton or
McAfee enough (antivirus and firewall). The updates take
hours and I want to conserve space for the things we
enjoy. Thanks for your help!!

Depends..

If you want to not only conserve that space but not have it corrupted
completely and rendered useless without a destructive installation, ignore
the updates and patches.

If you want to save space (buy a bigger hard drive - they're cheap) and stay
safe, then I suggest following a regular pattern of:

- Updating your antivirus definitions and scanning for viruses at least once
per month.
- Using Adware/Spyware killers like Lavasoft Adaware and Spybot Search and
Destroy and SpywareBlaster to scan your system regularly.
- Using and properly configuring a firewall - at least the Windows XP one,
if not a free one instead.
- Defragmenting your drives and occassionally running a scandisk to check
for errors.
- Backup your important files and folders to CD/etc.

That is the only way to partially ensure you are safe and will not one day
lose everything.
If you want more security - never hook it to a network, never dial into the
internet, and do all of the above.
