Not to point out the obvious, but uninstall the trial program.
AVG's antivirus is good, but their internet security set has problems with slowing down the net.
There new antivirus, AVG8, also includes net security and monitoring software that also slows down
the net.
AVG8 is a free update to the AVG 7.5 paid versions. A free version of AVG8 is reported to be
released in late 2008.
I have disabled the web watch features, but the programs nags you with a ! mark over the system tray
icon.

Can you tell us, what AV did you use before and did you unisntall it or
still on your system?.

Free trail mean for 30 days then you will need to buy the full version. Half
an hour too much and I don't think that AVG alone is causing it Does the
machine clean from malware and Viruses and what your Internet Speed?.
Bear in mind if you have lots of running Applications in the background
needing to Updates including the AVG/Windows Updates can slow down your
system to a halt, so check what running in the background by downloading the
Process Explorer from Microsoft.

I gave up AVG many moons ago and now use free Avast ; however , it may
be on "default" to do a system scan when it first opens .

AVG Free (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/) plus Windows Defender (www.microsoft.com then downloads)
plus Windows firewall will give you basic "Free" protection and will not slow your PC down
..
I am always amused by the people that are not prepared for the cost of PC ownership and want "Free"
software.
In Arizona we have "Snow Birds" who drive their $150,000 motorhome, towing a $35,000 SUV into the
state looking for a FREE place to park.

Free Avast is limited. It seems that you can not let it "scan" emails
or schedule a complete scan. The free version only provides a
"shield" protection which will block a virus when you access a
infected file.

sometimes, simply
uninstalling an
anti virus is no longer
an easy task.

many of them really
leach themselves into
the o.s. and when they
are uninstalled, those
programs do not replace
the system files they
modified.

what i would suggest is
to uninstall any and all
antivirals, then reboot.

if you pc is running fine,
then you probably in a
good position. however
this is subjective as a
functional computer is
perceived differently by
a regular person and a
computer geek.

in any case, the next step
would be to simply do a
repair installation with
your windows cd.

the above method will
not install a new operating
system, instead it will
compare your system files
on the disk to that on the
cd and replace or repair
your system files.

after your reboot, then
make a system restore point
and install any anti virus
program again. btw you
only need one antivirus,
one antispyware and one
firewall.

What Pop-up and did you gone through the cleaning steps I given to you?.
I don't know what version of IE? you have now on your system, but here some
info about how to enable Pop-up blocker and the Phishing Filter on IE7, also
you will need a firewall with AVG you can get Comodo or ZoneAlarm (both free).

How to Schedule AVG 7

Internet Explorer Pop-up Blocker: frequently asked questions

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/074f84cf-d303-4f62-ad3c-a1fb6434ae491033.mspx

Also you can schedule the Update for AVG to be downloaded manually and the
Updates for Microsoft to Alert you but Not to download the updates as you
will download when you feel having time on hand?.

Run disk cleanup and remove the old residing software on your system from
the Control panel >> Add/Remove Programs (look around you will find a
treasure there from software you don't need, search if you don't know any
application before removing to if it is a system app?).

Hi Sheryl,
Glad you sorted out, but for my mind to rest in peace can you send me your
Hijackthis log. I think you have a BHO installed and by Disabling the
third-party Browser the pop-up seems gone but it could be nothing!.
Download from here:
send me a copy at (e-mail address removed) , remove
the obvious to email me.
That if you wish, if you feel all sorted then no need.
Good luck.

don'tknow if this helps but here goes.
I have the avg free, and when i start my computer which is connected with a
modem it starts to download updates and then begins to scan automatic, this
happened today, so i stopped the scan.

when i ran this last nite it took over an hour, so i just forgot about
working on my computer and let it run, maybe i should change it to a manual
item instead of an automatic startup, it tend to get on my nerves, but
usually i just click and start the scan.

If i change it to a manual start item, i may forget to get updates, i am so
used to the icon in the tray, the free version does not have a scheduled
time, as i was looking at the menu on that today

To Stickman: Don't ride on someone else's post. If Sheryl can fix her problem, how do you expect
her to help you.
Start your own post and describe what you did, what error message you got, and how you tried to
uninstall it. You will get more help this way and leave Sheryl's post clean for others to help her.

To Sheryl: The full AVG Internet Security Program is no better than either Norton or McAfee's
Internet Security. All are bad resource hogs and really slow down the computer. The AVG Antivirus
(only) program is good and combined with Windows Firewall and Windows Defender (both free from MS)
will give you good (not necessarily great) security.

Recommend you uninstall AVG Internet Security and download the AVG 8 Free Antivirus (also includes
and antispyware) from http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition (first column down)
and when installing, do a custom installation that lets you uncheck the email scanner, which you do
not need and do not want.
Use the AVG uninstallation program that is in the Start menu under AVG folder.
