Internet Problem

I'm trying to setup a computer to use the internet throught a Ethernet
SmartSwitch.

As soon as I boot up the XP Pro machine it cannot assign an ip address so I
manually do it

ie 192.168.2.100
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
gateway of 192.168.2.1 (dns)

that says it is fine but still internet explorer or anything else that uses
the inter will not work.

Using the command prompt I can ping 192.168.2.1 and it works fine. Ip config
says it is fine too.

I have tried the wizards for setting up the internet and network with no
joy. With lan settings I have tried ticking on/off automatically detect
settings.

Two other computers are set up exactly the same way and work. Can anyone
please help?

Thanks.

When you say two other computer are set up exactly the same I assume you
mean they have different host IP addresses but the same for subnet mask and
default gateway?? Try pinging yahoo.com from a computer that can access the
internet and then ping the IP address that is returned from the problem
computer to see if that works or not. If that works you may have a problem
with winsock on the computer and you can use the command netsh int ip reset
c:\resetlog.txt to reset winsock to see if that helps. --- Steve

Thanks Steven, tried that with no joy, discovered that it was a winsock
problem and found a niffty utility to fix it. Somehow winsock got corrupted.

Kind Regards

Stew.

P.S No I wasn't using the same IP address for the computers :-]

Glad you got it resolved. I though it might be winsock related. Surprised
that netsh did not help and thanks for letting me know it did not. You
probably used lspfix which seems to be pretty popular. --- Steve

Another problem with the same machine. When I click on start / all programs /
update or use internet explorer we have a problem.

update, stalls for a long time and then internet explorer closes.

Internet explorer seems allright to explore normal sites that do not have
flash or shockwave etc. I have reinstalled these programs and still have the
same problem. (reinstalled with instructions from /kb/302396)

Windows media player does the same thing. Can play cd's but anything graphic
or even the visualizations do not display.
If I run WMP it just closes after a while.

Seems graphic related does it? Installed DixX player and codecs and its fine.

Any idea, need Internet explorer to work, installed Netscape and it does the
same thing!!

Since you had a winsock problem and now other problems a possibility is that
your computer could have problem with malware and or spyware. I would be
sure to run full system scans for viruses and spyware being sure to use the
latest definitions for any program you scan with and also scan while booted
into Safe mode. If you do not have a spyware program currently I recommend
that you try the free for personal use AdAware SE. The link below is also a
good resource on securing your network with needed basics to protect it and
further links on how to deal with spyware and viruses. My Nephew's computer
acted very much like yours and his was loaded with spyware. --- Steve

Yes there was spyware etc. All gone now.

I found out more on the internet problem. When I run internet explorer If I
click on stop quickly before anything loads and type in a url the page loads
fine.

If I click on anything from that page, or if a page has loaded and I type in
another url it locks up and then closes. No error messages.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help Steven.

I would try booting into Safe Mode with networking, making sure you are
using Windows Firewall or an internet router to protect your network, to see
if the problem still exists. If it does not you have some startup
service/application/driver causing the problem and you might be able to
track it down using msconfig and selective startup. If none of that helps
you may want to consider an upgrade/repair install that would require your
install disk and that you install first your service pack [if not slip
streamed on the install disk] and then all critical security updates found
at Windows Updates when done. That often fixes a lot of issues and is the
last stop before a new install and is usually not a real painful option for
those of us that have cable/DSL. --- Steve
