Internet problem-XP related???

Dear Windowers,

I use two computers: my old Windows 98se computer and a new Windows XP laptop.

I use Internet on both computers through 1 router/accesspoint (from Linksys).
But some pages do not seem to work on my new WinXP laptop, while they do
show on my Win98se computer.

For example when I try to access the Macromedia.com site to download the
latest Flash player, my Win98se can open the site, but the WinXp can not. It
show the "the page can not displayed".
Same problem when I tried to download the latest MSN Messenger program.

I installed on the WinXP the exact same security applications I used on
my old Win98se, which include; Avast (virusscanner), spybot (anti spyware),
Lavasoft ad-aware (anti spyware) and Zone alarm (firewall). The settings for
these are the same on both machines.

Can there be some kind of extra setting in WinXP that prevents some sites to
be opened? Can this be related to pages for downloading applications?

Can someone help me solve this problem?

Grt,
Wing

Hi wing007 :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

You don't mention if you have SP2, but, I'll take a guess.

also....if it applies:

Zone Alarm Pro can block Images in IE

1. Go into IE>Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom level>reset custom
level to Medium or Low
2. Go into IE>Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>set the slider to Medium or Low
3. Go to this site and read on adjusting the Privacy settings in ZA. It will
explain how to customize on a per site basis.

Dear Jan Il,

thank you for your reply?

A lot has been fixed through adjusting the firewall settings, though some
pages still don't come out right. Yet, I find it strange as on my old laptop
I have the same settings...

Your other suggestions unfortuntaly had no effect.

Can anyone help me further?

Best regards,
Wing

Hi wing007 :)

Are you getting any error messages at all? If so, please post the text of
what they are. This would give us more information to go on to determine
what might be continuing to cause the problem.

Disable the popup blocker in XP.

Also.....try adding macromedia.com to your Trusted Sites in IE
IE\Tools\Internet Options\Security tab....click on Trusted Sites\Sites
button

also......

If you are getting error messages when you click the link, then
your host file, blocked sites under restricted area in IE, or other security
apps that you might be using that can block sites is interfering. Check
your Antivirus.

Also, if you have SpywareBlaster installed, be sure you have Kill Flash
unchecked - Open SpywareBlaster - Tools - Click on Flash Killer then uncheck
"Switch off Flash Player" or in v3.1 Disable and block Macromedia Flash (4X
5X & 6X) in Internet Explorer.

If you have any type of Toolbar or 3rd Party program with an ad blocker,
disable it or uninstall it. Set your security to Medium if you have not
already done so.

A few of things could contribute to the problem. There are several Pop-up
blockers that will block Flash unless you turn it off. POP-UP Blocker will
not open Flash at all if you don't disable the Kill Flash. Some Flash has
pop-ups and the blockers will see them as ads or and kill it any way.

and.....

Fully Uninstall the Flash program according to the information below, then
reinstall it:

Remove Flash from AddRemove programs including all registry entries for
it. Reboot, then go to Macromedia's site. Since it is Flash based you
should
get the dialog to install Flash.

Hope this helps

Dear Jan,

thank you for your reply.

The only error message is the "cannot open page" display, like when the page
does not exists.

I tried a couple of your hints. I have not installed any 3rd party Toolbars
(not goolge or msn). Nor do have Spyblaster installed. Only the previous
mentioned security applications (Avast antivirus, Spybot, Ad-aware and
Zonealarm)

I do not know how to block the popup blocker in XP. By now the Macromedia
site works properly again. There seemed to be some setting in my Zonealarm
firewall was set too high. Strange though, as my old laptop had the same high
firewall settings.

Flash does not seems to be blocked, as I can now go to the Macromedia site
and the Flash animations appear properly.

Do you happen to know why some sites on my XP computer load very very
slowly? My old Win98se has no speed problem.

Please let me know.

Best regards,
Wing
