Upgrade to Win2000

Dear Windowers,

I would like to know how you guys feel about running Win2000 with (at
least)service
pack 3 on an laptop with 600mhz pentium 3 processor, 2x64=128mb ram, with
"avast" virusscanner, and "zonealarm" firewall.

I have heard before on the newsgroups that with these specs it is not wise
to upgrade this "oldtimer" from Win98se to WinXp. How do you feel about
upgrading to win2000?

Your Pentium 3 won't exactly fly but it will run Win2000
reasonably well. If you have an ADSL router rather than
a dial-up modem then you could do without ZoneAlarm.
It slows down the machine quite a lot.

I have w2k on a p-3 500 laptop and it runs fine. However I have
considerably more RAM and would suggest swapping both 64m ram sticks for
256m ones, or one of them for a 512m stick.

I have ZA on it and don't notice enough slowdown to worry about it.

But don't stop at sp3. Go to sp4, the rollup and beyond.

Dear Pegasus,

thank you for your reply.

I would like to ask you an additional question about use of Zonealarm. I
have heard that one can not just uninstall Zonealarm, as this can corrupt the
computer. Is this also the problem with an upgrade to Win2000?

Dear Rich,

thank you for your reply.

I have heard about sp4 before, I just asked, because the CD I have contains
w2k with sp3. But I will surely upgrade to sp4.
