Ian

I don't know if anyone knows the answer to this. I
suddenly have been unable to reset any "internet optoins"
under "tools" in IE 6.0. It tells me that the "operation
has been cancelled due to restriction in effect on the
computer. See system adminstrator". I am that
adminstrator. My wife has the other account on the same
computer. Both have adminstrator priveldges and her's
works fine. I can access the internet optons through the
control panel but CANNOT change the "home page" setting.
Why?

This had been working fine for a long time and suddenly
went haywire on me.

I am using Windows XP Pro.

Thanks

Ian,

This sounds like a spyware or virus problem (home page changes locked
out). Assuming that you have up to date virus protection, check for
spyware next. Get Spybot S&D and HijackThis, and help at SWI Forums.
Start with this article, which has all the instructions you need:

Hi

See http://www.dougknox.com/, Win XP Fixes, Fix Internet Options Restrictions

Your IE is most likely hijacked...

And from a previous post by Ramesh:

Hi,

Remove IE Restrictions & Restore Missing tabs
http://www.angelfire.com/dragon/sramesh2k/reg/IE_reset_restrictions.reg

The problem is due to:

1. A spyware. Download Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com, scan the system
and eliminate the malware products. Re-apply the above fix if necessary.
** Remember to update the pattern file using WebUpdate in Ad-Aware **

2. You have enabled SpyBot immunize (protection) feature or any other
similar software

I am having the exact same problem only in WinXP home edition

Have you recently installed any Internet security software
or anti-spyware/hijacker programs?

By default these may block you from changing settings within
"OE-Internet Options"
