I recently upgraded from a windows 95 to XP. I felt no
need to upgrade to Office XP as I am happy with Office
97. Unfortunately when I installed it I accidently
installed Outlook 97 as the mail client. I wanted to use
Outlook Express 6 so I uninstalled outlook 97 and now I
do not have a mail client configured in my tools>internet
options>programs>email and I cannot change it. There is
nothing in the drop dwon list. There must be some
registry seeting I need to tweak. Does anyone have any
ideas?

Also related to the same installation of Office 97. If I
open a word document from my docuements it tells me
another application has it open but if I open the same
document from word it is fine.

One cannot upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows XP.

He may have purchased a new computer with XP and that was an
"upgrade" or he could have used the W95 CD as proof and used
an upgrade CD to clean install XP.

Hi Ron,

Set Outlook Express as default mail client - Start/Run and type in:
MSIMN.EXE /REG

Restore OE to the E-mail List in Internet Options (Row 9)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/restore_oe_client.reg

Restore Hotmail, Outlook and OE under Programs (Line 250)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Reset OE for Send To , Mail To , Send Mail (Line 64)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Note: Another issue with Office 97 installed is the Spell Checker for OE.
Workaround:

Go to Start/Run/EXPAND X:\i386\CSAPI3T1.DL_ C:\CSAPI3T1.DLL (Where X is your
CD-Rom drive letter). And then copy it to: Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof

Or download the file here: Replace the Csapi3t1.dll file
http://www.tech-pro.co.uk/howto_010.html

An error occurred while the spelling was being checked.

Have a look at this tip from Jim Pickering, MVP (Outlook Express)

Go to Start | Run and type the following:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg
(Check the path to msimn.exe to make sure that is correct)

Make certain to include the quotations marks and the space between the ending quotation mark and the slash.

Then open Internet Explorer and go to Tools\Internet Options\Programs and set OE as the default mail (and news) program.
