internet knock off

I have dial up service and have tried two different providers. I can log on,
ususally, pretty easily, but am knocked off (or lose my internet connection)
very, very frequently. I have no idea where to start. Can anyone help me?
Thanks. Ginny

Scan for malware.

What is malware? I'm going to see if I can scan for it, but, as you can
probably tell, I'm a novice. Thanks,

Make sure you have the correct modem drivers installed. Modems are 99% similar so any driver appears to work but that 1% difference can cause problems like this.

My first thought would be the telephone line. Does it sound noisy or
"crackle" or anything like that during normal phone use? Are you using an
extender cable to run a connection to where the PC is? Do you have no end of
"extension" phones sharing the same circuit?

The modem driver is the one that came with the computer, how do I know if it
is the correct one? I just assume it is.
The computer is plugged in with just a short cable into a splitter as we
have two lines. The telephone on line 2 (which is the computer line) seems
clear enough when we speak on it.

Ginny, there are four things everyone should have, on thier computer. 1) Anti
virus program 2) Firewall 3) Ad aware se 4) Spybot search and destroy I'm
sure you probably have the first two. You can download the last two for free.
Adaware is typed, as follows( lava soft) These programs usually clean up
unwanted tracking program's such as mal ware, spyware etc. Good Luck

It is something you will have to get used to with dial-up. Most dial-up
service providers have a very limited number of modems the customers can
use, so during peak times they will drop customers who have been on for a
while to allow other users some access time.

The only way to avoid this scenario is to go broadband.
