instructions say -click start then control panel or click start then settings
to open control panel- i can find neither CP or settings in the start panel
after several unsuccessful attempts to install sp2 i seem to have lost my
control panel or at least a way of opening it so that i can install a firewall

Using the XP style start menu? Right click the Start button and select
Properties. Click the Customize button on the Start Menu page that appears.
On the Advanced page, move the radio dot under "Control Panel" to "display
as link" or "display as menu" (your choice).
