I want to transfer a file from my PC to my providers server. I've talked to
my provider, and they don't understand why I can't do a direct ftp connection
unless IE is blocking the url ftp address. I'm using XP Home with IE version
6, and I'm using Norton Systems Works and Spy Sweeper. Is there some way I
can access my provider to transfer my file or must I obtain the WS_ftp
program??
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Tom,

Please check the following setting in Internet Explorer.

Go to Tools --> Internet Options, and to the Advanced Tab.
Make sure you have 'Enable folder view for FTP sites' checked, and 'Use
Passive FTP checked. Both are under the browsing section.

That should give you a start. Also, what is the exact message you are
receiving? They can be helpful....

You could also try using FTP from a command prompt. Go to Start --> Run and
type cmd and hit enter. At the prompt, type ftp. At the FTP prompt, type o
xx.xx.xxx.xxx where the x's represent the IP address of the FTP site you are
trying to access. You can use dir to list directories, cd to change
directories, send to send files, and get to receive files. Type ? at the ftp
prompt for a list of commands.

Hope this helps,
Jon

Thanks Jon,

Changing my internet options did the trick. I talked to three different
people from my providers technical assistance staff, and I talked to
technical assistance at Dell who told me that I would have to pay to get an
answer on software, and you all came through. Thanks again,
Tomc
