yeah im having problems with internet explorer. i downloaded and installed
java the other day and after that i cant connect to the internet. my modem
is working fine and i am getting a ping because i tested it. i think it might
have something to do with something odd in my registry because something like
this has happened to me before. if you can help please get back to me as soon
as possible. also the only reason im online right now cuz i am not on the
computer that cant go on the internet, i am on a labtop. so please get back

If it's a registry problem: The quickest fix would be to uninstall the Java if it's listed
in Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs. Then reboot, click Start button/All
Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore, and opt to: Restore My Computer to an
Earlier Time, click the Next button. When the next window opens, look at the calendar and
find a date in BOLD font (the bold font dates have Restore Points), select a date closest
to, but prior to when you installed what caused the problem, then continue with the rest
of the wizard until finished. When your system reboots, and you're informed that the
System Restore process succeeded, try to make your internet connection. If you are then
able to connect, you'll know that your diagnosis was correct. Be advised: If you
installed any other software or updates, other than the Java, after the Restore Point
date, you will have to re-install them. But, if doing the System Restore doesn't fix the
problem, your not being able to connect after installing Java may have been coincidental,
and not the actual cause of the problem.

Another CDO poster.

Java had nothing to do with this. Start your troubleshooting elsewhere,

Have you tried deleting the old connection in Control Panel/Network Connections,
rebooting, and then creating a new connection, and see if that works?

If you've been there, done that: Have you tried a Repair Install? If you have a Windows
XP CD (NOT A RECOVERY CD):

For a step by step walk through of a
Windows XP Repair Install, including screenshots, go to:

http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

When the page opens, scroll down and click on: How To Run A Repair
Install.
