Has anyone else heard that MS will be discontinuning
suppport for Win2000 (security) updates to IE, and that
MS will offer an XP upgrade path for $99
as 'compensation'? I seem to have seen this on CNet.

Mainstream support for Windows 2000 is scheduled to end 30-Jun-2005. Based on what Microsoft did with Windows 98, you might see them providing Critical updates past that point, but that will probably not be known until closer to the cut off date.

As far as offering 'compensation', that doesn't really make sense -- the life cycle is what it is and no compensation is due for doing what was planned all along. I'm sure you will still be able to upgrade to XP, just the same as you can right now, but any predictions as to a price that far out are probably not going to be very accurate.
