Internet Explorer randomly locking up

My parents have just gotten a computer at most three weeks ago. This computer
has gone through windows update(effective as of yesterday) and to the best of
my knowledge has no third party software installed save for what emachines
shipped it with. I take that back, I had installed java so I could use web
based messengers, irc clients, and the like without having to install
anything on their machine. The viras scanner that came with comcast is
running, and has run for the past five minutes, however as of yet it's
pulling up nothing.

What i would like to know is why this computer has suddenly decided to start
freezing randomly. It doesn't matter what page it is, or where. IE will
randomly freeze out(but leave the rest of the computer completely and
perfictly functional leaving me able to close it out through task manager).
When looking at the offending window through task manager it shows the
application as running, dispite the fact it has clearly frozen.

Is my java client to blaim here? I'd downloaded it from sun if it makes any
difference. Is there any way a piece of malware could've simply gotten onto
the computer through random site surfing? My parents're looking to me to fix
the problem and in this case I'm completely stumped.

Any help would be appreciated

Does it have the Comcast toolbar? If so, try uninstalling it.
