Internet Explorer Preferences

I installed Java Virtual Machine but when I try to open
the file, it says Java is not installed. Upon further
query to the internet, it seems I need to check Internet
Explorer Preferences which I am being told is under EDIT.
However, the only options I have under EDIT are SELECT ALL
and FIND ON THIS PAGE. Can anyone help me with this?
It's most frustrating! I have a DE\ell computer with
Windows 2000
