Internet Explorer not connecting

We have one pc that will not connect to the internet. I can ping an address
such as "www.microsoft.com" withought a problem, and doing nslookups work
just fine. But Internet Explorer will not find any page. Except for a
router on our LAN with web-base admin. I have checked all network, and IE
settings, and they seem identical to our other PCs. This PC originaly had
Win98 and the same problem. I have since upgraded it to WinXP, but the
problem persists. I have also reinstalled IE6. The PC connects to the LAN
without any problems. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

I installed Mozilla, and I still can not access a web page. So, it has to
be in the network settings. But I can ping a "name" and get a response.
But I can not access a page even if I use the IP address of that page.

I'd bet a browser hijack is a good possibility.

How current is your virus protection? Try these free online virus scans:

Now check for, and learn to defend against, additional carriers of infection.
Have you downloaded these programs before? Download them again, as many are
revised frequently, to keep up with the current level of malware being attempted
constantly - get the absolutely most current version of each product listed.
They're all free - and most pretty small, so they download quickly enough.

First, download LSP-Fix and WinsockXPFIx from <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>,
and CWShredder from <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html>. All are
free.

Next, close all Internet Explorer and Outlook windows, then run CWShredder.
Have it fix all variants.

Now check for, and remove, spyware. Get HijackThis
<http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155> and Spybot S&D
<http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download>. Both free.
1) Install and run Spybot. First update it ("Search for updates"), then run a
scan ("Check for problems"). Trust Spybot, and make all recommended deletions.
2) Install and run HijackThis. Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save the
HJT Log.
3) Have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the following
forums (and post it here):

<http://forums.tomcoyote.org/>
<http://www.wilderssecurity.com/>

If removal of any spyware affects your ability to access the internet (some
spyware builds itself into the network software, and its removal may damage your
network), run LSP-Fix and / or WinsockXPFIx.

BTW, please don't contribute to the spread, and success, of email address mining
viruses. Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a bit
safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the
internet - never post your address unmunged.

you can ping, you can do DNS, you can post to a newsgroup... are you sure
that port 80 tcp (used by http) is not blocked from something?

Go question, I will take a look at that. I am however, not posting to
newsgroups from the same PC.

This computer has never been connected to the internet or received email.
All virus and spyware scans look good.

I too am fighting with the issue of partial Internet loss.

After 10-25 Minutes I can no longer browse the web, or download files from
websites. This started happening after I removed a virus from two systems,
one a WinXP Home and another Win98. For both systems, if I restart windows
(note, not having to reboot) then I can browse for another 10-25 mins. After
I loose the ability to browse I can still PING, run email, even the browsers
resolve host names, they just can not pull data.

After some watching, I >think< it might be a port crashing issue, yet I have
repaired Windows, the network drivers and card drivers to no avail. I have
tried Winsock repair tools, no luck. Yes I have run virus scans on the
systems by installing from CDs. Nothing found.

Anyone out there have any clue what to try next???

(Before someone says try an online scanner please note that I can not keep a
live connection long enough to even download a scan)
