Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs
Click Add/Remove Windows Components on the left.
Make sure Internet Explorer is checked.

Have just tried that, but get the same message.

There was no file size 0.0mb in the add/remove box

Anything else i can do?

Would using the recovcery disk help?

Would you like to download Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (English) in its
entirety?

Internet Explorer Full Download Instructions:

1. Download the IE 6 SP1 setup file using this link: ie6setup.exe

2. Place the downloaded setup file here: C:\Downloads (Create this folder if
necessary.)

3. Click Start | Run and type the command below into the Open field (see
screenshot below), and then click OK. NOTE: Use the EXACT syntax shown
below, including the quotation marks. Copying the text below and pasting it
into the Open field is recommended.

"C:\Downloads\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"

First I would try this:
How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP

Make sure your anti-virus is turned off.

Before using a recovery disk, save anything you wish to keep somewhere not
on the hard drive.

That won't help since he claims that he has XPsp2.
Therefore his base version of IE is IE6sp2
which is not available separately.

Frank's last suggestion will probably have the same difficulty.
If anything we might hope that when OP visits WU after that
that he would be told to reinstall XPsp2.

I think that the only way to "reinstall" IE6sp2 may be to uninstall XPsp2
and then visit WU to let it figure out what all needs to be restored in
what order (since uninstalling XPsp2 will mean that numerous preSP2
patches then come back into the picture.)

Frank's first suggestion (to activate the icons) was the best advice,
since the chances are that iexplore.exe is still there, just not as visible.
Somebody might have tried to sabotage that feature by deleting iexplore.exe
and it could still be picked up from the Prefetch directory.
If it was also deleted from there I don't see any alternative to reinstalling
XPsp2 but perhaps there is an .inf file which can be run in the same
way that there was once an .inf file which could be run in order to
reinstall IE6 into XP. (See posts by Jim Byrd and reposts of excerpts
of them by Jan Il for details about that last possibility. I have never
tried it myself.)

A possible hack if he has access to another XPsp2 would be
to try copying iexplore.exe from it and see what happens.
E.g. then he could try the new IE6sp2 repair command:

iexplore.exe /rereg
